Weekend Media Review

I've been catching up on tons of media over the last year and I figured I should start recording what I've watched/listened to here on the dealio, so we can exchange thoughts and ideas.

Rating System: Scale of 1 - 10

Examples of The Dealio Scale:

A 10/10 would be something like - There Will Be Blood, The Godfather II, Man on Wire, Waltz with Bashir, Eluvium - An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death, Sigur Ros - ALL, South Park - the later seasons, Soundtrack to the Assassination of Jesse James, etc...

A 1/10 would be along the lines of - Wet Hot American Summer, The Tracey Fragments, Half Nelson, Be Kind Rewind, Bon Jovi - ALL, Britney Spears - ALL, Kath & Kim, the news, etc...

Movies

1) Terminator - 6
2) Terminator 2 - 8
3) Role Models - 4

1) South Park - Season 8: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - 8

  1. I think I'm in a minority. I prefer the first Terminator over T2.

  2. Hmmm... your scale sounds reasonable.

Maybe it's because I'm used to analyzing behavior and developing scales (and because I want to eventually become a Film Critic), but should we not also produce a set of "items" that can determine the 1-10 scale (i.e. Rate according to: writing, editing, directing, acting, etc.).

You already have a developing scale that imitates an items list... just an idea.

PS: Your taste is similar to my own, so you get extra kudos points from me.

  5. Be Kind Rewind suffers from something I call Dualistic Neglect: If Kaufman and Gondry (dual, i.e. two individuals) don't make a film together, the movie tends to be mediocre (neglected). Please refer to Be Kind Rewind, Science of Sleep, Adaptation, and Synedoche, New York. In contrast, please look at Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

  6. To be fair, I'd put...
    Be Kind Rewind: 6.5
    Half Nelson: 7
    Britney Spears: 1
Bon Jovi: 2 (those songs are catchy)
    Pineapple Express: 4
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: 10!

  7. WHAT?!?! You're crazy. Be Kind Rewind was awesome, Wet Hot American Summer is one of the best cult classics ever (who doesn't love The State), Bon Jovi has had some of the best songs ever (just because something's popular doesn't mean it's bad, in fact most things are popular because they're good) and I dare you not to sing along with Livin On A Prayer.

Come on D'Emilio, I expect better...

  8. I agree with MrZ that we should "produce a set of "items" that can determine the 1-10 scale (i.e. Rate according to: writing, editing, directing, acting, etc.)". I'll break that down later today.

I thought Be Kind Rewind was awful and Wet Hot American Summer failed to live up to its "cult classic" humor. Maybe if I were a pre-teen when I saw it I'd think it was cool, but it doesn't reel me in - at all.

Just because Bon Jovi has had some hit songs that you can't get out of your head, does not mean its good music. His stuff is commercial and appeals to the masses - I know why people like it, I'll sing and dance along like an idiot, but it doesn't mean I think he's a good musician. Same thing goes for Spears - her songs are catchy, some are annoying, but they are formulaic and basically stupid. However, these become huge hits. Again, doesn't mean there's any true talent or musicianship - just commercial.

I don't think all things commercial/popular are bad, but some things are. And just because something is popular doesn't mean its good...

  9. I didn't like Be Kind Rewind either. For me, it was a case of a well-done trailer and a flat movie.

  10. Whether you think he is a good musician or not, you have to admit the Jon Bon Jovi is awful cute;P and he is Italian!

  13. Terminator 1 getting a lower rating than Terminator 2? Something's not quite right there. Terminator 2 has the "kid factor" which added a certain element of "endearing moments"/cheese, which I think brought the movie down a little. T1 didn't really have that (except for the scene where John Connor is created - which was necessary). So in my opinion T1 was the cooler flick based on the fact that it was a darker movie.

You're bang on with Sigur Ros being a 10 though. If you haven't been listening to a band called "Elbow" you should be...they are a 10 too.
